I was born in Colyton in March 1942, have returned many times, not since 2017 (covid etc intervened) when I met up with old Colyton friends for the Re-enactment of the Monmouth Rebellion. I always stand outside the house where I was born, Richmond House in King Street. The two Coly friends I met in 2017 am in touch with all the times (they live elsewhere in Devon); the grandparents of one owned the sweet shop (Mr & Mrs Brockenshire) lived in Hill Head; the other friend’s parents had the coalmerchants Mr & Mrs Phare. My mother’s family have strong links with Colyton; also Branscombe village (which is the family name); my great granny Branscombe lived opposite St Winifred’s church but died in Colyton at the age of 93. She was living with Colin West, who was the local scoutmaster. My mother’s two brothers, attended Branscombe school. We holidayed many times in the old chalets on the beach and above. Mother spent her youth in Branscombe, and her father rented a house named Hooknall (but not sure if there is any record of this house now).
